SOCIAL RESEARCH THAT INFORMS AND ENABLES SOCIETY
MISSION OF NCGSER
We are experts in qualitative and quantitative social research and aspire to be Ghana's premier independent social research institute. Our aim is to develop relevant and robust empirical evidence from each research, strong enough to
substantially improve policy in Ghana and to change thinking across the country. We hope to act as an omphalos for engaging and influencing local and national policy.
A major difference between countries and organisations that succeed and those that do not lies in how well they listen and learn. Successful countries and organizations listen to their customers, their employees, their members, their citizens and their communities. And they learn by carefully analyzing the feedback they get from these strategic partners. One of the easiest and most effective ways to gather such feed- back is with a survey. We hope ours will enable a more effective understanding of the Ghanaian society and the issues confronting it.
The goals of a NCGSER are:
To inform public debate and discussion on the major issues of the day by injecting evidence-based research into headline news.
How NCGSERs make a difference:
- Encourage critical and accurate reporting of objective research in the mainstream media by helping journalists understand and more effectively report on complex or controversial issues.
- Help the media, and ultimately the public, to access the best research more easily. Encourage, train and facilitate more researchers to engage with the media. Assist media officers to promote their research in an accurate and responsible manner.
How NCGSERs operate:
- NCGSERs are not-for-profit independent organizations that work collaboratively with each other and with the media and research institutions within their own countries.
- NCGSERs work proactively, providing credible expertise and commentary on breaking news and providing context to complex or controversial issues.
Our ethos includes:
- Championing evidence-based research in media reporting. Encouraging and supporting researchers and organizations to engage openly and proactively about their work even when it is complex and controversial. We acknowledge that debate is fundamental to a healthy society and that robust research has an important role to play in informing debate with evidence.
Freedom:
- The unique feature of all NCGSERs is that they are independent of any one institution. Strict rules ensure editorial independence from funders. NCGSERs do not have any specific agenda, we are not a political party or pressure group, other than to promote the reporting of evidence-based research. It is not the role of an NCGSER to ‘take sides’ or advocate for specific disciplines or issues. NCGSERs have a capped funding arrangement where no donor can fund the centre more than 50% of its operating budget. This not only ensures that no one donor can dominate or set the agenda for the centre, it also provides a buffer so that any donor that is unhappy with the work of the centre can leave without it significantly impacting on its financial survival.
